There are many ways on how to start with gas-powered RC car or truck. There are many realistic features offered by these remote-controlled cars and trucks. They come in a variety of styles and types in the industry. In choosing one, there are many considerations you should take before eventually owning one.

Radio-controlled cars and trucks lack the power and running time. But if you want to consider, you can convert them into gas powered RC cars, with the use of nitromethane-based fuel. This fuel provides RC cars a level or realism or performance, which are absent on other battery-powered vehicles. There are options of engines and transmitters available to allow you to choose one depending on how you’d want the RC car works.

To help you begin in finding the right gas-powered RC car, the following are the factors you should consider:

1.    Engines. The most important aspect in a gas RC car, you can choose from the variety of engine models available to choose from. Generally, most RC cars use a specific type, which is commonly called as “glow” engine. It is a 2-cycle combustion engine, which creates power to the RC car preparing it for realism that also produces exhaust in the process. In replacement of spark plugs utilized by automotive engines, a “glow plug” is used for this engine. It is being heated in turn by a “glow starter.” The heat will be held by the “glow plug” to which this is now used to fire engine strokes for rest of the running power.

2.    Fuel. Just like the actual gasoline used in automobiles, the nitromethane-based gas fuel the RC cars. The fuel mixture is formulated with special lubricants so that it protects the engine from the excessive heat produced by the combustion process. The lubricants are the same with the gas-oil you use with your small engine equipments or some chainsaws. Accessories such as a special bottle pump may be needed to get nitro-fuel into your fuel tank of the RC car. Filters are also used on these cars and the same with your automobile they require replacement at a proper time interval.

3.    Radio. Radio controller is used to control the RC car and could be same type used on electrically-powered RC cars. It is radio controller operates on 2-channel system that needs batteries to make it work. Additional batteries would be needed to power the receiver though there are other receivers that are fed from the motor itself.

4.    Sport or competition. This is an aspect you most considered when choosing body style. There are different options for you; you have choices from sedans, trucks, buggies, stock cars, and other popular car models. These are basically available in two versions: sports, and competition version. Sports RC cars typically cost less than the car you intend to race, which of course would need more power and higher speeds. Ball bearings and oil shocks are some of the advanced options included for the competition RC car version.

Depending on the type you need, RC car kits and ready-to-car or RTR kits are available. If you are a beginner, RTR kits are what you need as this comes out of the box ready for the fuel. RC car kit, on the other hand, requires heavy work but allows you to decide how they would be put together.

A Radio Controlled Tank is a toy model of a war vehicle that moves with the help of a hand-held transmitter. This vehicle has radio controlled systems installed in them due which it moves in the direction that is propelled by the transmitter. Commercially, an RC tank comes in 1/35th scale, 1/24th scale and 1/16th scale.

The most well known Radio Controlled Tank in the 1/35th scale is the one manufactured by Tamiya. This is a Japanese manufacturer which specializes in radio controlled cars, plastic models and various educational models. In the category of 1/24th scale, we have the mounted Airsoft guns manufactured by Tokyo-Mauri.  You can also find cheaper versions of Airsoft guns made by Heng Long. However the most daunting version of a Radio Controlled Tank comes in the form of the 1/16th scale version. Tamiya is known to be a leader in this range too, manufacturing some of the best RC tanks with realistic features like the engine sound and flashing lights. The one modeled on the lines of the German battle tank Leopard 2, made by Tamiya also comes with a gyro-stabilized gun system. But the flip side is that it comes expensive and can cost around $750 or so.

RC tanks are available for private use too, in 1/6th and 1/4th scale. In fact, the biggest RC tank in the world is the King Tiger, that comes in 1/4th scale and is more than 8 feet long. The prices for these tanks are more than £6500 Pound Sterling.

While buying a Radio Controlled Tank, make sure that it is as close to the real thing, albeit the size of course. Pay attention to things like the engine and gun sound effects, machine guns, working headlights and tail lights, realistic recoil function, motorized turret, full suspension, well articulated tracks, standard speed and realistic looks. 

An entry level model comes in 1:30 and 1:24 scales and do not cost much. For instance, Heng Long’s 1/30th scale Pershing and Sherman have realistic sound effects and a good flashing gun and then there is the 1 /24th scale Abrams, that has a BB firing gun capable of shooting standard 6mm plastic BBs. For the uninitiated, the Sherman Tank was the primary tank used by the US and its allies during World War II and the Pershing was the tank introduced in the final stages of the war, succeeding the M4 Sherman. The M1 Abrams is a modern war tank that was incorporated in the US service in the year 1980.

Investing in a 1/16th scale model is even better because though a bit more costlier than entry level ones, this one has real working metal tracks, wheels, gear box and dual motor system, which means it can climb over objects and is an apt replica to the real thing. The look and the design of the Radio Controlled Tank has evolved over a period of time and the contemporary look and features can pass off as the real tank in terms of looks and features.

Why has the U.S. army not developed more robotic weaponry?

With all the terrible loss of life going on in military conflicts, I am surprised that the greatest strength of the U.S. has not been used to a greater degree: technological advantage, with the financial wealth to optimize it.

So, for example, why not remote-control automated tanks, or small remote-control vehicles and other armed devices that infantry could use to explore dangerous buildings or neighbourhoods, etc.
It might be expensive, but it seems totally feasible with the technology now available. Think of the lives it could save!

I know there is some automation, such as drone aircraft, etc. but most of this seems rudimentary, and mainly useful for intelligence-gathering, etc. I’ve heard of robotic devices used to search rubble after disasters. Again, I’m surprised the military hasn’t developed these technologies further.

The US Military has made many leaps forward in robot technology and in some areas that you have mentioned. BUT the studies also show that a M1A1 Tank loader being an 18 to 21 years old is faster and can distinguish quicker than a robot who is an enemy or not… Technology for entering buildings has been around for years, but is very cost prohibitive for combat use and has to have 3 personnel to operate and maintain. In field conditions the machinery needs excessive amount of maintenance to keep it in top “combat” trim… When the ability of machinery equals the abilities of a young well trained soldier then Their will be less personnel and more technology in the modern battlefield.

WOW… I’ve built a few 1/16th scale Tamiya tanks, but one sixth scale ?? For “GI Joe” type figures eh ??
