petrol or nitro remote control cars?

I’m buying a petrol or nitro remote control car, but a few questions first
1.do you have to use batteries in them if it does not have a pull start or something.
2. whats better nitro or petrol
3.can i use rc cars on grass and stones or should i get a buggy
4.how much does the average car fuel tank take
and how many gears are better
